Easy Compost System You Can Build

You don’t need to handsome or handy to make this easy compost system.

Most hardware or farm supply stores carry “welded wire mesh”.   It is like chicken wire but more substantial. The openings are 1 inch by 2 inches and comes in about 3 foot widths.  An 11 foot length of this will a cylindrical bin of sorts. It will come off the roll and want to curve, which is helpful. Three twist ties will make it into a compost bin, 3’ high and 3’ diameter. Or you can use cattle fencing, which has larger holes; or hardware cloth, which has smaller holes.

You can get by with one bin but two are best.

Cost of the wire mesh varies, big box stores have it for between $50 – $60 for a 3’x50’ roll, which is more than enough.

Throw your grass clippings, leaves, tea bags, coffee grounds,  non-meat kitchen scraps.  Shredded newspapers, ash from a fireplace. Occasionally you can throw in a shovelful of soil.  (Top soil, plain garden soil, soil from your garden). Water the contents!

When the first bin has “percolated” and is full, undo the twist ties, and using a pitch fork pitch the contents into the second, empty bin.  Add a few handfuls of soil, stir, moisten and let “cook”. You can add a black plastic covering to help  keep the pile damp.

With two bins, you can keep finished compost on one side, while starting a new pile in the other bin.
It is a great way to always be making more compost!
